Strange Bedfellows

I saw a picture of Moqtada al Sadr’s radical Shia Mahdi Army militia on the web today. These are the guys who are killing American soldiers and here is a photo of a unit the size of a platoon or perhaps a company marching in broad daylight. The photo was not all-encompassing but it was a showed enough to see that there was a substantial force gathered in one place. I wondered to myself, how is it that we can get these great news pictures of these guys and yet they are still breathing? I read a little more and followed another link in a story and I found this article.

After I read it, I definitely have an answer to my question. However, I have many more questions from that one answer.

What a fascinating view of things in Iraq. It simultaneously makes me optimistic and not. It sounds like we might be trying to get too "cute" in how we win this war.

In general it sounds like we need to let our soldiers spend more time throwing bombs and bullets as opposed to Girl Scout cookies. Not at the kids of course.

Now if I was a liberal reading this my first thought would be to try and pin war atrocities on the soldiers for giving kids food with too much sugar, fat amd maybe even God Forbid - TRANS FATS!!!! Almost as quickly I would also denounce the evil tobacco empire. This poor Iraqi that the interpreter Feris took the reporter to see was obviously addicted to cigarettes. All thanks to the greed and evil of BIG TOBACCO. And speaking of the smoking, what about the health of the reporter and interpreter? Sweet Sassy Molassy! Their very lives were being put in jeopardy by being subjected to these noxious second hand smoke fumes. We need to make sure no one is subjected to second hand smoke on a US isntallation. The fact that BushCo can't fix that proves we are bogged down in an unwinnable second hand smoke war.

One more thought in reference to your title "Strange Bedfellows": I guess the term "don't let the bed bugs bite" takes on a whole new meaning over there.
