Only in America can you spend eighteen months in prison for illegal dog-fighting.
Only in America can a picture of a gun be considered threatening.
Only in America can you spend six months in jail for fixing up your property.
Where is the sense of proportion?

This post sounds like a poem. I can just hear Maya Angelou reading this with the Boston Pops solemnly playing "American the Beautiful" underneath her.
NOT.
The (almost) common denominator here is "process". People's moral compass is wackier than Carrot Top after 4 fingers of scotch. As such they have no basis for stepping back and making a true evaluation of what is good and what is evil. So they fall back on man's "processes" to make judgments. Understatement alert: man is not God.
Self proclaimed pedophile? We have a technicality and that violates our "process". Better let him go.
Illegal alien committed child rape? Parole is part of the "process" and we can't violate that. Better let him go. Oh, he did it again? We'll follow the "process" again...
Picture of a gun? That violates zero tolerance policies. (i.e. "process"). Better string him up.
No permits for fixing your property? The mother of all "process" violations. Thou shall not mess with code enforcement officers.
The Mike Vick thing doesn't fit this template exactly but it is a result of a whacked out sense of proportion.
