Immigration is a hot topic these days. Ours is a nation of immigrants. It is one of the factors that makes our country great. That being said, it is sad that on one hand we have the government doing everything it can to keep illegal aliens here who for the most part are a net drain on our society in terms of the social programs and services that they absorb versus the contribution that they make. Yet, this same government does everything it can to prevent highly skilled aliens from entering and remaining in the United States.
It seems ludicrous that we should send highly skilled professionals back to their home countries after they have taken advantage of our educational system at their own expense. Yet, we do everything short of amnesty to keep unskilled aliens who drain the system. This certainly speaks volumes about the powers that be and about us as a nation that elected them.

I think the Rev. Parry's theory on his recent adventure as a potential juror would be helpful here. Basically, he hypothesized that lawyers didn't want intelligent jurors. That way they would be less likely to get a citizen that could see through the excrement some of them try to shovel. By that same token, I believe politicians don’t want any potential new constituents who might be capable of seeing through the excrement they try to peddle as well. There certainly are some “educated idiots” but by and large most educated people are better equipped to withstand the tsunami of …stuff…than some guy that is barely literate in Spanish, much less English. Plus, as our humble host here noted, poor uneducated immigrants are also prime candidates to help perpetuate the various welfare state programs so many of the political elite get giddy as a school girl over. I doubt many chemical engineers need food stamps and Medicaid. (As an aside, I’m typing this in MSWord and Bill Gates saw fit to auto correct “medicaid” to be spelled with a capital “M”)
On the other hand, you certainly can’t overlook some other explanations either. More educated immigrants are usually law abiding and as such, on the radar. They are simply easier to beat up on and make it look like something is being done about the illegal immigration problem. This is the same basic phenomena as politicians taking cold medicine away to fight the war on drugs.
Also, if illegal immigrants were not here market forces would naturally drive up the wages of low skill blue collar jobs. If that happened politicians wouldn’t be able to take advantage of another one of their pet issues – the minimum wage. Low skill jobs would naturally fall into that “living wage” they are always talking about. But they couldn’t take credit for that. The smaller supply of available labor would drive up the price. The market would dictate what a person’s labor is worth and not some bureaucrat. American’s will do any job that needs to be done if the price is right. Yes, some prices would go up as a result but it would reflect the true value goods and services have to people. Not skewed by harmful, feel good policies.
