The Fall of Rome and Perhaps the United States

Leave it to the Brits to report a US GAO study. I am sure that no one on this side of the pond cares to report such things.

"inter-generational equity". I think that sounds like a very subtle way to say Social Security isn't sustainable and needs to be fixed. Currently I believe about 1 trillion dollars of the annual US budget is spent on SS, Medicare, and Medicaid. Thats over a third of the budget and will only get bigger unless things change dramatically.

While I may have some minor disagreemenrs over a few details, I'd have to say this is pretty accurate. GAO isn't perfect but they do actually make some good suggestions at times. However the cancer that is the federal government is in pretty bad shape. Most (not all) middle and upper level managers are only out for self promotion and preservation. Most GAO recommendations involve actual WORK and don't lend themselves to garnering praise and promotions.

I'm surprised "moral decay" was mentioned though. I'd be curious to see if there was any more explanation about that. He better be careful becuase, depending on what he said, he could be in danger of running afoul of the diversity nazis. And THAT is the one thing upper level managers actually DO care about. "If we are to meet tomorrow's challenges we must leverage the strength in our diversity and strive to look more like the nation we represent."

I digress...I could write pages about the problems with the Federal Government. In short it is a reflection of the politicians that drive it. The scary thing about that though is...who puts the politicians there and what does that say about them?
