I have always been fairly attentive to the specific words that I use. I believe that it is very important to use the right words and that words are the primary means that we use to communicate ideas. But, there are times when this can be carried to a ridiculous extreme. This is especially true when you are dealing with lawyers and the law. There always seems to be wiggle room when it comes to what are particular expression of the written law means. There are countless anecdotes about criminals being released on a technicality. This becomes more dangerous as the seriousness of the alleged offense increases. What should you do with people who don't like Americans and want to kill as many of us as possible? Well, the first thing you do is make sure that you assign them the proper designation. Whether in civilian court or military court, common sense is often trumped by picayune semantics. "There's another: why may not that be the skull of a lawyer? Where be his quiddits now, his quillets, his cases, his tenures, and his tricks? why does he suffer this rude knave now to knock him about the sconce with a dirty shovel, and will not tell him of his action of battery? Hum! This fellow might be in's time a great buyer of land, with his statutes, his recognizances, his fines, his double vouchers, his recoveries: is this the fine of his fines, and the recovery of his recoveries, to have his fine pate full of fine dirt? will his vouchers vouch him no more of his purchases, and double ones too, than the length and breadth of a pair of indentures? The very conveyances of his lands will hardly lie in this box; and must the inheritor himself have no more, ha?" - Hamlet

If I recall correctly, 5 or 6 Germans came ashore somewhere on the eastern seaboard via a submarine sometime during WWII. I believe they were quickly captured. Within approximately a week they were dispatched via a serious case of, er, "lead poisoning". If these Germans were caught today they would be in danger of dying of old age. Come to think of it, if WW II were today, we'd be speaking German east of the Mississippi and Japanese to the west.
